Weekly Crate Digging #4 - 8/19/22
Tippa My Tongue - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Strong 4/10
The occasional onomatopoeic refrains from frontman Anthony Kiedis are grating to the ears, but other than that, this new release is ultimately just recycled material from a band that is gripping on to their legacy and relevance.
No Handoutz - Internet Money feat. Yeat
Soft 7/10
There is something infectiously entertaining about the unintelligible nature of Yeat’s delivery. It is reminiscent of the early days of “mumble rap”, but slightly more dynamic than most, in addition to the consistently layered and intense production with all of his signature bells. This track is mindless fun.
5 4 3 2 1 - Offset
Soft 5/10
Offset has been a very busy man, having featured on two of the last three Crate Digging compilations. Now though, he’s going solo and much of the energy that he had as a member of the Migos seems to be lost. This cut is incredibly lowkey, and just feels as though Offset is flowing across the track in order to fill its every crevice. It is a monotonous addition to his independent catalog, further supporting the notion that he is able to thrive more so in an ensemble. Baby Keem actually produced this track, and I would have much rather liked to hear him on this minimalist instrumental.
Chief So - Chief Keef
Solid 6/10
Another track with prevalent bells through its runtime, this fresh offering from Chicago legend Chief Keef is an unrelenting and energetic banger. Clocking in at just over 4 and a half minutes, it definitely starts to drag on, but Keef’s narcissistic charisma never seems to fade.
Make You Say - Zedd, Maren Morris & BEAUZ
Solid 2/10
You would think this new Zedd song is a computer-generated top-40 track after first listen. After your second listen though, it becomes evident that it is just a woeful excuse for a dance-pop track that employs production that is more aligned with a lullaby than partying.
